As someone who has never been in the role of Teacher Librarian other than as a TTOC, there is so much room for me to grow. The area that I am least confident is with technology. I am getting to stretch in that area in LIBE 477! Part of my challenge with technology is that it is so out of my wheelhouse that I feel like I don't even know enough about what I don't know! Build a website? What? How? A wiki? What's that? I am finding that the best way for me to learn about technology is for me to use it. It is slow going, but little by little I am learning new skills and feeling more tech literate.
Apart from the information in this course, I'm finding that there is a lot of helpful how to resources online. I'm thinking of making a website for my final LIBE 477 project and have found great web tutorials like this one:
Another resource that I have come across is Common Sense Media's Education site. The site rates educational apps and online resources and offers workshops and lessons for teachers. Common Sense offers a Digital Citizenship curriculum for K-12. This is definitely a resource I will turn to in the future.
Other than learning by doing, I really enjoy learning from my colleagues. While working as a TTOC in a high school library, I was able to meet with my district's library mentor for some help with a weeding project. She, as well as other TLs, is someone I will go to in the future to help we with my professional learning. I would also like to visit other school libraries in and outside my district to see how things are being done elsewhere. I would also like to visit more public libraries to get new ideas.

ReplyDeleteI definitely know what you mean by "don't even know what I don't know" about technology. While I felt reserved to admit that, I am glad that you did so clearly, I feel less disconnected! I also share your sentiment about using technology in order to learn about it. A hands on learning motivate myself to participate directly with what I am learning. Where I still fall short is finding the time to do everything. Realistically, I can not do everything, so I am learning to find time for what is important, and 'cataloguing' what I need to learn/ do in the future.
I am just getting back to teaching after being at home with kids, and since starting my TL Diploma courses. I am finding that the school library at my current school is not embodying how we discuss the role, philosophy of a Library Learning Commons in the course work. I would agree with you that visiting other Library Learning Commons and seeing more possibilities would benefit my professional development as a TL. It would offer me the chance to connect with other TLs to share ideas and learn.
This is great to see. The TL at my school uses Common Sense quite often during our library block to accentuate or support any subject matter or ideas that they have touched on during our time. I find the content is always suitable, engaging and to the point - which is especially important for young learners with a short attention span in the LLC. I love that this platform has been created to dive into these subjects that are not always touched on in the classroom and that they are ideas that can most certainly be supported by TLs alike while collaborating with classroom teachers.
ReplyDeleteI use Common Sense Education so much as a teacher librarian. Our district really pushed each of our schools to create a digital literacy curriculum last year, and our school's is largely based on Common Sense Education. They also have another side to their business which is Common Sense Media where you can find reviews and age suggestions for books, movies, games, and other media.
